Improving Separation of Oil and Water With a Novel Coalescing Centrifugal Pump
2018
Summary A novel centrifugal pump that increases oil-droplet sizes in produced water has been developed. This paper investigates a concept of pumping-pressure optimization, with respect to downstream separation efficiency, for the new pump. The investigation shows that the coalescing centrifugal pump always increased the separation efficiency of a downstream hydrocyclone. Furthermore, it is shown that the pumping pressure can be adjusted to maximize the improvement. Experimental results demonstrate how pumping conditions that minimize the volume fraction of droplets with a diameter smaller than the cut size of the hydrocyclone maximize the separation efficiency. Finally, it is demonstrated h…
Automatic Operation and Control of a Novel Coalescing Centrifugal Pump for Improved Oil/Water Separation
2019
Summary In this paper we present the development and implementation of automatic operation and control for a pump/hydrocyclone produced-water-treatment system to maximize oil/water-separation efficiency. A so-called perturb-and-observe (P&O) algorithm is adapted for a novel centrifugal pump to continuously optimize the point of operation. The novel pump coalesces and increases the size of oil droplets in the produced water, resulting in a unique relationship between the coalescing effect and the point of operation, and allowing for the successful implementation of the P&O algorithm. The algorithm was implemented in two different setups, one measuring the droplet-size distribution be…
Modelling Spatial Memory
2018
Among the different capabilities of animals, the formation of spatial memories is crucial for their life. Living beings able to move, constantly need to orient themselves in the environment to reach a target that might be not always visible. This chapter investigates the process of spatial memory formation as an essential ingredient for orientation in open and unstructured environments. Neural centres devoted to spatial memory and path integration were deeply investigated both in rats and different insect species like ants, bees and fruit flies. In this chapter a neural-inspired model for the formation of a spatial working memory is discussed considering some key elements of the insect neur…
Towards a methodological toolset for the psycholinguistics of translation
2021
Abstract The manuscript provides readers with a basic methodological toolset for experimental psycholinguistic studies on translation. Following a description of key methodological concepts and the rationale behind experimental designs in psycholinguistics, we discuss experimental paradigms adopted from bilingualism research, which potentially constitute a methodological foundation for studies investigating the psycholinguistics of translation. Specifically, we show that priming paradigms possess several inherent advantages which make them particularly suitable for research on translation. The manuscript critically discusses key methodological problems associated with such paradigms and ill…
Towards Neural Reusable Neuro-inspired Systems
2018
This chapter presents an overview of some key aspects of the neuro-inspired modelling previously discussed, under the new perspective of the neural reuse theory. Here it is envisaged that the excellent capabilities shown by insects with their small neuron number and relatively low brain complexity, as compared to vertebrates, could be justified if some key neural structures are re-used for different behavioural needs. The chapter recalls some examples, found in the literature for addressing specific topics and reformulates them in relation to the neural reuse theory.
High Frequency Model of PV Systems for the Evaluation of Ground Currents
2012
A high frequency model of a photovoltaic (PV) plant is developed and analysed to investigate the common mode (CM) currents circulating through the ground connections of the plant. The modelling method is based on the measurement of the impedance frequency response of photovoltaic module and on a high frequency representation of the power conversion unit. An overall lumped parameters circuit model is obtained and then implemented in PSpice. The CM leakage currents are evaluated by simulation.
Evaluation of ground currents in a PV system with high frequency modeling
2018
In this work a high frequency model of a photovoltaic (PV) plant is identified and implemented aiming to investigate the common mode (CM) currents circulating through the ground connections of the plant. From the identification of the impedance obtained by frequency response of photovoltaic module and by a suitable of the power conversion unit, an equivalent high frequency circuit representation has been developed. The lumped parameters circuit model is implemented in PSpice environment to obtain the CM leakage currents. Harmonics at frequencies multiple of the switching frequency and a strong resonance at about 12 MHz are detected.
Facilitating climate change adaptation through communication:Insights from the development of a visualization tool
2015
Climate change communication on anticipated impacts and adaptive responses is frequently presented as an effective means to facilitate implementation of adaptation to mitigate risks to residential buildings. However, it requires that communication is developed in a way that resonates with the context of the target audience, provides intelligible information and addresses perceived barriers to adaptation. In this paper we reflect upon criteria for useful climate change communication gained over a three year development process of a web-based tool – VisAdapt™ – aimed at increasing the adaptive capacity among Nordic homeowners. Based on the results from continuous user-testing and focus group …
Monitoring the Internal and External Loads of Young Team Handball Players during Competition
2021
This study aimed to examine the internal- and external-training-load (ITL and ETL, respectively) during a match of young handball players. Field testing included heart-rate monitoring (memory belt, Suunto) as a marker of ITL and accelerometry (motion-biosensor, Actical Respironcis, Philips) as a marker of ETL. Time motion analysis data were obtained by recording the player’s game activities and later analysed with the Matlab software package. T-test and Pearson-product-moment correlation coefficient were used to examine the differences and the relationship between variables collected in the study. The t-test analysis did not show significant differences between the total distance covered (2…
Porphyrines et tétraazamacrocycles dérivés du DOTA : association de deux ligands pour la chélation de métaux d'intérêt en imagerie médicale multimoda…
2012
The goal of my PhD thesis was to synthesize new molecules, which give access to heterobimetallic complexes with interesting properties for multimodal imaging. In this manuscript, several main points have been studied. The first part of this work concerns the synthesis and characterization of ligands. We describe here the synthesis of five new ligands based on the association of one porphyrin and one or several cyclen derivatives. Those ligands are water-soluble. During the synthesis, we have targeted improvements to our work and developed a new synthetic pathway, which allowed us to obtain one ligand incorporating a porphyrin, a cyclen derivative and a free amine function. This function cou…
